Virgil "Oscar" Kocian, 98, Wayside, passed away Thursday December 10, 2020.He was born February 23, 1922 to the late Joseph and Sophie (Mancel) Kocian. Virgil served his country in the U.S. Coast Guard. On September 1, 1948 he married Erna Bornemann.
Virgil and Erna ran Kocian's Garage in Wayside for over 50 years. He was a member of Zion Lutheran Church, Wayside, and past member of the Wayside Volunteer Fire Department. Virgil enjoyed spending time at the deer shack in Three Lakes and the cabin in Little Sturgeon. In his younger years he played in several polka bands.
Virgil is survived by his wife Erna, children; Gerald (Joy) Kocian, Tom Kocian, Debra (Chuck) Haataja, Dennis (special friend Laura) Kocian, as well as 10 grandchildren, 14 great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, as well three siblings: Viola (Clarence) Bornemann, Riney (Arvilla) Kocian and Victor (Evelyn) Kocian.
Due to Covid a private service will be held at 1:00PM Thursday December 17th at Zion Lutheran Church, Wayside. A graveside service will take place in spring with full military honors.
