Florence
Hafeman
August 27, 1921 – February 28, 2023
Florence (Kluender) Hafeman was born on August 27, 1921, and raised on a small farm north of Morrison, WI. As the second child of Laura and Arnold Kluender. The first-born son died at birth. She was the oldest of the next four girls, Mabel, Margaret (Wendt), Hazel, and Dolores.
Florence learned hard work and took responsibility in caring for her siblings. In her teens, she experienced the death of her father and the Great Depression. The family sold the farm and moved to De Pere where she received support from a childless aunt and uncle. One of her favorite gifts was a stylish faux fur coat, which caught the eye of her future husband, Harvey Hafeman.
They were married in 1945 while he was enlisted in the U.S. Navy. They lived on base at Great Lakes Naval Base, IL. Where Florence worked at Abott Labs until Cheryl (Knoespel) was born. Patsy (Drews) was born a year later at the Naval Base in Davenport, IA.
The family moved to Harvey's farm on Hill Rd. in Greenleaf, where three more boys, Dean, Wayne, and Don were added to the family. Florence helped day and night milking and feeding cows, and calves. She excelled in growing and selling strawberries and raspberries and tending a large fruit orchard and vegetable garden; asparagus was her favorite. Good at preserving food, cooking, and baking, she enjoyed preparing large meals for her family, foster kids, hired hands and other relatives.
Florence enjoyed playing cards, celebrating Harvey's birthday, old time music and dancing, especially polkas, well into her 80's. She was a member of the Brown County Homemaker's Club, Wayside Zion Lutheran Church, and Ladies Aid, while also supporting her children's 4-H activities, music lessons and band.
Sadly, she and Harvey divorced after 38 years. Florence then went on to stage 3 of her life, moving to Green Bay.
She became independent, working at restaurants, adding skills as a drapery specialist, and in sales at Sears. She took classes at NWTC in accounting and prepared taxes for H&R Block. Keen on learning how to manage her finances, she did very well with the little she had. She was able to winter in Florida, travel and put her son Don through college.
Florence was a long-time member of Pilgrim Lutheran Church, Green Bay. The Woodside complex in Ashwaubenon was her home for the last 8 years where the brown faux fur coat found a place on her sofa.
Wearing her special coat, Florence was buried at Zion Lutheran Cemetery, Morrison, next to her sister Mabel on March 4, 2023. She is survived by 5 children, 7 grandchildren, 10 great grandchildren and her sister Dolores Springstube. At age 101.5 she was truly blessed by her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.
The family will greet family and friends on Saturday, March 18, 2023, at Pilgrim Lutheran Church, 1731 Saint Agnes Dr., Green Bay, starting at 10:00AM, until time of service at 10:30AM with Pastor Scott Malme officiating.
